Garden Façade of Sanssouci Palace
The southern garden façade rises directly above the vineyard terraces. Its domed central section contains the oval Marble Hall; between the round-arched windows, herms and caryatids support the entablature. The photographs range from frontal views and side perspectives to views through the clipped hedges of the upper terrace.
Vineyard Terraces and Main Staircase
The central axis of the vineyard terraces connects the garden parterre with the palace. The photographs show the main staircase, retaining walls and planted terraces from different distances. Some were taken when the foliage was sparse, making the structure of the terraces particularly easy to see.
Cour d’Honneur, North Façade and Colonnades
On the north side, the cour d’honneur opens between two curved colonnades. The sequence of images moves from views through the rows of columns to wider views of the courtyard façade. This makes the spatial layout of the cour d’honneur and its contrast with the more sculpturally articulated garden façade easier to see.
Architectural Details, Trellised Walkways and Sculptures
Close-up photographs focus on the round-arched windows, herms and caryatids, façade reliefs and the greenery-covered trellised walkways at the sides of the palace. The gilded sun disc on the latticework and several garden sculptures are also shown individually.
Park Details and Planting
The smaller subjects extend the view beyond the palace itself. They include ornamental columns, sculptures, flowers and paths in the garden parterre below the terraces. The photographs also document different stages of seasonal vegetation and varying weather conditions.
Interiors and Furnishings of Sanssouci Palace
The photographs provide views of several interiors at Sanssouci Palace. Alongside the Marble Hall and the richly decorated Concert Room, they include guest rooms and selected details of the historic furnishings. Marble columns, gilded rocaille ornament, mirrors, paintings, sculptures, clocks and furniture show the variety of the palace interiors.
